The first time Leo picked up a hammer, he held it like it might bite him.
He was nine, small for his age, and a little suspicious of tools. The hammer felt heavy. The nails looked sharp. His focus bounced between the workbench and the other kids, all of whom seemed much more confident than he felt.
Fast forward a few days.
Leo is standing at the same workbench, tongue sticking out in intense concentration, carefully and more confidently measuring and cutting a piece of wood.
By the end of the week, Leo proudly takes home a wooden contraption-box-invention AND greater focus, confidence, and the thrilling realization that he can build things with his own hands.
A year later, when someone asks what he wants to be when he grows up, Leo doesn’t hesitate.
“A carpenter or an engineer,” he says. “Someone who makes stuff.”
This is the magic of OTL Tinkering School Summer Camps.

What Is OTL Tinkering School, Anyway?
OTL Tinkering School camps are hands-on, creative, slightly messy, deeply empowering summer experiences for kids aged 9–12 and teens, aged 13-16 years. They’re not about worksheets, lectures, or being told exactly what to do. Instead, they’re about curiosity, experimentation, problem-solving, and learning by doing.
At OTL, kids work with real tools—saws, drills, hammers, measuring tapes—and real materials like wood, cardboard, and rope. Under the guidance of experienced facilitators, they learn how to use tools safely and responsibly while building real projects.
And yes, that means they get to tinker, test, mess up, try again, and occasionally redesign everything five minutes before cleanup time.
Just like real life.
Why Tools Matter (More Than You Might Think)
There’s something magical that happens when a kid learns to use tools.
Suddenly, the world feels different. Objects are no longer just there—they’re things that can be taken apart, transformed, improved. A scrap of wood becomes a potential bridge. A loose idea becomes a tangible creation.
Using tools requires focus. You can’t daydream while sawing a straight line or drilling a hole in the right place. Kids who struggle to sit still often find themselves deeply engaged, because their hands and minds are working together.
Using tools builds confidence. There’s a huge difference between being told “you did a good job” and seeingsomething you built standing on its own. That confidence spills over into other areas—school, friendships, and problem-solving.
And yes, using tools can spark professional interests. Not every camper will grow up to be a carpenter, engineer, architect, or designer—but many will discover that they love building and figuring out how things work. For some kids, OTL is the first time they see a future profession that feels exciting and achievable.
More Than Just Building Stuff
While the projects are a huge part of the fun, OTL camps are about much more than wood and nails.
Kids Learn to Think Like Problem-Solvers

What happens when the wheels don’t turn?
Why won’t the structure stand up?
How can we make this stronger, faster, or cooler?
At OTL, mistakes aren’t failures—they’re information. Kids learn to test ideas, adapt plans, and keep going even when things don’t work the first time (or the third time).
Collaboration Comes Naturally
Some projects are solo, but many involve teamwork. Kids negotiate ideas, divide tasks, help each other troubleshoot, and celebrate each other’s wins. These are real-world collaboration skills, learned in a fun setting.
Creativity Takes the Lead
There’s no single “right answer” at OTL. One camper’s project might be practical and precise; another might be whimsical and wild. Both are celebrated. Kids are encouraged to follow their curiosity and push their ideas further.
Confidence and Independence
Kids are old enough to handle tools safely and understand more complex instructions, but young enough to approach challenges with imagination and fearlessness. They’re beginning to think more independently and are eager to prove what they can do.
OTL camps meet kids right where they are—giving them responsibility, trusting them with real tools, and supporting them as they rise to the challenge. For many kids, it’s the first-time adults say: “We trust you to do this.”
The Best Week of Their Summer
Summer camps come in all shapes and sizes. Some are not as great as advertised. Some are (unfortunately) just childcare.
OTL Tinkering School camps are different.
They’re the kind of experience where kids come home dusty, tired, proud, and bursting with stories. Where they learn skills that stick. Where they discover that they’re capable of more than they thought.
They don’t just do things at OTL—they become builders, thinkers, problem-solvers, and creators.
So, if you’re looking for a summer experience that will:
- Build your child’s confidence
- Improve focus and perseverance
- Spark creativity and curiosity
- Create memories that last far beyond summer
… then it’s time to send your kid to OTL Tinkering School Camp! Registration is now open. 🔨✨
