Community & Demo night – Learn To Mend @ Makerspace North
May 28 @ 18:30 – 21:00

Repair don’t toss! Swap, don’t shop!

Bring clothing or textiles in need of repair, and learn how to sew, darn, felt, and patch your way back to useable clothing through one-on-one and hands-on demonstrations. Browse used clothing and yarn/knitting supplies while you wait at the concurrent swap event, and bring your own unwanted items to contribute. Drinks and snacks provided.

First come, first fixed! All welcome to take part in the swap and watch demonstrations, without bringing items to fix. Tickets not required to take part in the swap, only if you want to bring an item to learn to mend.

Due to limited space, please bring only one item per person. Remember to bring the right color of thread or yard, buttons, zippers and any other replacement parts you might need to mend your item!

Swap rules:

  • no limit to how much you can bring or take, but no hoarding of items or taking items to sell later.
  • items will be loosely sorted into type, youth/children, infants, accessories, footwear, linens/housewear and outerwear – please help us out by place your items accordingly when you arrive or directing one of the volunteers as to where items belong.
  • items should be relatively clean – from storage is okay as long as there are no strong odours or other storage related issues.
  • damaged items are okay to bring.
  • leftover items will be repurposed or donated to charity.
  • bring a bag or two (or more) to take home your items.
  • bags can be left in the designated “claimed” area during browsing/repairs – do not remove items from other people’s bags.
  • if you’re bringing things to swap, come at 6pm to organize your clothes/yarn.

A collaborative, and free, event by Sustainable Eastern Ontario and the Ottawa Tool Library!

Donations to either, or both, organizations welcome, but not required.

If you haven’t been to the tool library, be sure to check out the directions and accessibility information here. We’re kinda tricky to find. ;)

With thanks to our partners, Makerspace North.

Swap till you Drop @ Ottawa Tool Library
Jun 2 @ 10:00 – 14:00

The Ottawa Tool Library is taking part in the 100in1 Day community activities across Ottawa with a giant swap at Makerspace North.

Clean out those storage spaces and garages and bring in any tools, working small appliances, and clothing you’re not using, giving them a new life.

Pick-up one-of-a-kind items, contribute to the sharing economy, and connect with your community at this popular event. Sustainably get rid of things you no longer want and swap them for things you actually do, like a cool lamp or children’s clothes.

Drop off and sorting starts at 10 am and swapping at 11 am.

Grab a coffee while you wait for swapping to begin and hang out to learn more about the tool library!

This event is made possible by our partner Makerspace North.

Synapcity is a citizen-led collaborative initiative to deepen democracy and increase civic vitality in Ottawa.
